Whether it occurs early on or later in life, developing hair loss (alopecia) can be emotionally taxing for both women and men. Many individuals who experience hair loss wonder: Why is this happening to me? There are numerous factors which may contribute to hair loss or thinning. Let’s take a look at some of the most common reasons for hair loss in women, plus treatment options which can help get hair loss under control before it becomes permanent.

Common Reasons for Hair Loss in Women

Alopecia areata, telogen effluvium and androgenic alopecia (female-pattern hair loss) are a few types of hair loss which can affect women. Depending on the type of alopecia experienced, as well as other individual factors, the extent and duration of hair loss will vary. All of the following can be possible reasons for hair loss in women:

  • Medications – Certain drugs and supplements have the potential to cause hair loss as a side effect. These include some anti-depressants and medications used to treat heart issues, high blood pressure, arthritis and cancer.
  • Family history of hair loss – More commonly known as female-pattern baldness, androgenic alopecia can be hereditary. This type of hair loss typically occurs gradually – as a woman ages – and may lead to thinness along the crown and/or hair line recession.
  • Hormonal changes – Pregnancy, menopause and use of birth control can all cause hormonal changes in a woman’s body. These fluctuations – along with significant stress – may result in a type of hair loss called telogen effluvium.
  • Underlying medical conditions – In some cases, alopecia can be a sign of a medical condition. Thyroid issues, anemia, diabetes and lupus are all known to cause hair loss in some patients.

While not an exhaustive list, these are some of the most common reasons for hair loss in women. Depending on what is causing hair loss, the most appropriate treatment will differ from patient to patient. Treatment options may include medicated shampoos, laser treatments, local injections, oral/topical medications and surgical options.
