Winter is on it’s way in New Jersey! As we welcome cooler, less humid days and nights, you may begin to notice some not-so-welcome changes in your skin – especially if you suffer from a chronic skin condition. The NJ skin specialists at Kessel Dermatology are here to discuss some of the most common winter skin problems, plus provide advice on keeping them under control.

4 Common Winter Skin Problems & Tips for Managing Them

  1. Skin Disorder Flares – Dry air is a major contributing factor to flare-ups of many chronic skin conditions, including eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. To combat dry, irritated skin during the dry autumn & winter months, we suggest staying well hydrated, using a humidifier, applying moisturizer more frequently and keeping your showers short (and not too hot).
  2. Dandruff – Along with other areas of the body, the scalp can get dried out during winter – and this may result in dandruff. Limiting hair washing and avoiding the use of hot water on your head will help prevent the moisture loss which is known to cause a flaky scalp. If dandruff continues to be a concern for you, getting a medicated shampoo from your dermatology provider may also be beneficial.
  3. Sun Damage – After soaking up the sun all summer long, it’s common to see residual effects such as sun spots and wrinkles. The end of summer is a good time to schedule your annual skin cancer screening, or to consider anti-aging treatments.
  4. Dry, Brittle Nails – Peeling, lackluster nails often come along with the common fall skin problems we’ve just mentioned. Taking vitamin supplements and wearing gloves while doing the dishes & other housework will go a long way to keep your nails strong and beautiful.

Hopefully, these tips will be useful in helping you care for your hair, skin and nails this season.
