Nobody wants to develop wrinkles, especially when at a younger age. However, it’s not always possible to avoid because wrinkles form during the simplest of tasks such as making an expression or even sleeping. Preventing these wrinkles means understanding how they’re caused and what you can do to avoid them.

Expression Wrinkles vs. Sleep Wrinkles

Expression wrinkles develop on the face when individuals bunch up certain parts of the face. When muscles move on the face, the overlying skin develops a wrinkle. This is similar to when someone raises their eyebrows, causing the forehead skin to bunch and wrinkles form. The more this happens, the more and more impact it can have on the skin over time.

Sleep wrinkles develop not by the use of muscles, but by the position we lie our heads when we sleep. For instance, if an individual prefers sleeping on their side or stomach, the more prone they are to have their face on the pillow. This is similar to a force of stress or compression on the face, causing lines.

Preventing Sleep Wrinkles

Some individuals have used new pillows to help reduce the pressure on their faces in hopes of helping prevent wrinkles. Others simply try to sleep on their backs as much as possible. This is easier said than done, though, as we change positions quite often throughout the night. While sleeping on your back is one way to prevent them, it is also beneficial to prevent expression wrinkles and wrinkles caused by stress.
